A VERY SPECIAL BIRTHDAY FOR A LIFE MEMBER
Congratulations to our Club Life Member
David McDonald who celebrates his 100th Birthday
on 9th July, 2020
David was born in Lismore, NSW on 9th July, 1920 and was second born of ten children. He moved to Sydney with his family when he was 5 years old. He attended Marist Bros College at Randwick and enlisted in the Army on 5th January, 1942.
David met his wife Phyllis at Ashfield RSL and they married at
St Vincent’s Church in Ashfield on 22nd September, 1951. They lived in Ashfield for nearly 50 years and raised their family, son David and daughter Lee. In 1999 they moved up to Coal Point to be closer to their daughter.
He was part of the 55th Battalion and was deployed to Port Moresby in May 1942. The 55th amalgamated with the 53rd Battalion after losses from both Battalions during battles. He was in 3rd Air Maintenance Company which was formed to drop supplies to troops from planes, as the mud tracks became impassable as the Australian Forces advanced through New Guinea, pushing the Japanese troops back.
The Air Maintenance Companies were known as the “Bully Beef Bombers” and later “Biscuit Bombers”. David was based at Nadzab and worked out of Dobodura Airfield. While based at Nadzab he helped build a road between Nadzab and Lae.
Despite taking daily atabrine tablets David contracted malaria whilst in New Guinea.
After the War David worked for WH Johnson then Freddy Poole.
He worked for over 40 years as a carpet layer and laid the carpet in Admiralty House. David has had five total knee replacements as a direct result of using the old manual carpet stretchers.
Ashfield RSL Club was a big part of David’s life after the War.
David was a Director of the Club for 30 years and 10 years of those years he was Vice President. He also sat on various committees including the Ashfield RSL Club Sub Branch.
David and some of his brothers played in the Ashfield RSL Rugby League football team in the early years and took out the Premiership in 1950. Over the years David played golf with the Club and also participated in the Ashfield RSL Alligators Swimming Club. In 1970 he travelled to Lismore and competed in the State RSL Swimming Championship which he won. He also played indoor bowls and lawn bowls with the Club. He won some interclub championships and won the NABA award (which stood for Not a Bowler’s A%$#hole !!).
David attended 66 consecutive Anzac marches with the Club but in recent years had to resort to being driven in a jeep.
David was made a Life Member of Ashfield RSL Club in 1966.
David is now living in a nursing home in Toronto and it has been difficult for his family to see him due to the COVID-19 lockdowns.
His family is hoping the restrictions will be eased so they can celebrate with him.
Ashfield RSL Club wish David the warmest congratulations to mark an extraordinary milestone.
May the celebration be a special reminder of a century of fond memories and great milestones throughout his life. Happy 100th Birthday.
